Colony
This is a game I made 10 years ago on Kongregate back when there was a unity player. I have brought it back to life to work on html5. The name was called spore but due to confusion with the other Spore game I have renamed it colony. If people like the concept, perhaps I will make a Colony 2.
Description:
Help defend a spore colony against a hostile environment. Your goal is to survive long enough for the colony to sprout a core seed. Break up clumps of pollen to for power ups or additional seeds. You colony can only survive 10 hits. Some rocks will break apart and must be focused down. Watch out, there are 3 bosses who want nothing more than to end the colony. As you defend you will earn achievements which will give permanent bonuses.
How To Play:
- Hover/click on rocks to defend
- Pollen clumps will spawn periodically. Click/Hover over them to break them up for power ups.
- Drag and drop to use one of the two abilities
- Rock duster - Will damage and destroy rocks in a large area
- Spawn Seeds - Will spawn extra seeds to help in defense.
- There are several kinds of spores which help in your colony's survival.
- Basic Yellow - These little guys don't move but will give their lives to break up rocks. They will start on the surface but at maturity will break away and orbit the colony.
- Yellow - These bigger bothers will break off and proactively seek out rocks.
- Red - These spores will grow buds which will break away and seek out rocks. They have high damage but do not track and grow slowly.
- Blue - These spores spawn fast but deal light damage.
- Spike Root - This wonderful root will fire fast high damaged single target projectiles which will also spawn buds after hitting their target.
- Achievements unlock permanent power ups
- Beating the game will unlock an endless mode
- How long can you survive for?
Dev notes:
Porting to html5 wasn't without issue. Much of the core visual aesthetic did not perfectly survive. In a large part this is due to the bloom package used not working with the latest version of unity. Additionally, unity's 2d renderer and particle systems changed across versions which impacted how it all looks. It is not worth trying to perfectly match the original for web. Desktop builds look perfect still. If you want a desktop build, let me know.
Genre: The idea was a 360 degree clicker tower defense mash up with a more atmospheric take. Initially, the idea was after each level the core seed would move to the next level as the colony grew. However due to time constrains only a single level was developed.
This was made long before vampire survivors. The genre of roguelike survivals with minimal input had been around in the indie scene for a long while. I am so excited to see the success the genre has had. It is always amazing to see indie games do well.
